Background

A company in the automotive sector manufactures very large vehicles in high volumes. During the early stages of production, these semi-finished vehicles are indistinguishable from one another. Due to the nature of the production process, these items are temporarily stored—often without proper tracking—in areas that can be hundreds of meters away from where they are eventually needed.

Challenge

The semi-finished products are stored both indoors and outdoors, making the use of GPS technologies unfeasible. An initial attempt to track items by assigning the responsibility to forklift drivers failed due to the excessive manual effort required to collect accurate location data. When an item went untracked, it would effectively exit the production process and only reappear once it was eventually identified—sometimes weeks later. This led to cascading delays and made it difficult to monitor production. The search process often involved covering large areas by bicycle or forklift.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, our solution partner Bit Tonic implemented a Quuppa solution—equivalent to AccuRTLS—using AoA (Angle-of-Arrival) technology. This cutting-edge solution enables real-time tracking with location accuracy down to a few tens of centimeters in real-world industrial environments.

Each semi-finished product was fitted with a BlueUp Forte+ tag compatible with Quuppa’s infrastructure, enabling traditional indoor tracking via ceiling-mounted antennas. For the expansive outdoor areas—spanning several square kilometers—a fully autonomous drone system was developed. The drone is capable of autonomous take-off, landing, and navigation along predefined flight paths covering typical storage zones. Equipped with an AoA antenna, it can locate tagged items with one-meter accuracy. In adverse weather conditions or when flying is not possible, a similar tracking device mounted on forklifts—combined with GPS—was used to detect nearby assets during normal operations.

Results

The customer now has real-time visibility into the location of his semi-finished products, without requiring workers to perform manual tracking. This streamlined system has significantly improved production efficiency and reduced delays.

Knowing where your business-critical assets are is vital, and managing location data across multiple geographic locations can indeed be challenging. Quuppa Site Manager (QSM) is a centralised site management system that allows users to manage asset tracking across multiple sites and access all location data from a single dashboard. Site Manager is part of the Quuppa for Enterprise offering, which provides a comprehensive solution for effective system management and next-generation services at scale.

With a bi-directional, persistent connection to all on-site edge devices, Quuppa Site Manager allows you to monitor the status of all your Quuppa Positioning Engines (*), actively manage configurations, and perform updates to your Quuppa systems remotely.

Simple and Efficient Asset Management

Quuppa Site Manager simplifies the management of your tracking infrastructure. It is designed for organisations that have multiple sites in different locations, or a single large site with multiple buildings and potentially different infrastructures. With Quuppa Site Manager, users can remotely monitor, update and make necessary changes to their sites without being physically present at each facility. This eliminates the hassle of implementing changes on-site or setting up secure remote connections to each site separately, and allows you to easily upgrade and downgrade Quuppa system components. Testing new software versions and pushing them into production becomes a streamlined process that improves overall system management efficiency.

Cloud-Based APIs for Enhanced Connectivity

Quuppa for Enterprise provides a modernised and secure way to connect to Quuppa APIs via Site Manager. Each Quuppa Positioning Engine (QPE) connected to Site Manager can be controlled through its own API endpoint, secured with API tokens generated and managed through the Site Manager user interface. This cloud-based approach ensures secure and reliable connectivity while providing seamless access to Quuppa APIs.

Dedicated Single-Tenant Cloud Architecture

Quuppa Site Manager is built on a dedicated single-tenant cloud architecture, creating a separate instance and database for each customer. This architecture offers several key advantages:

  • Data Security: Each customer’s data is stored in an independent database, ensuring it remains separate and inaccessible to others outside the organisation.
  • Reliability: Your system will run on a separate instance that is not affected by traffic from other systems and peak loads, ensuring the system stability and reliability.

While Quuppa Pro provides precise location tracking, Quuppa Lite focuses on providing approximate location information, making it suitable for scenarios where pinpoint accuracy is not necessary across the entire facility.
Quuppa Lite offers a more generalised view of asset location, providing information on which area an asset is located (presence detection or area presence). This flexibility ensures that businesses can focus their resources on areas that require precise tracking while still having a general understanding of asset location in other parts of the facility.

Lower Deployment and Operating Costs

Implementing Quuppa Lite comes with a range of benefits that can significantly improve inventory management processes while reducing operating costs. One of the primary advantages of Quuppa Lite is its affordability due to reduced deployment and operational costs. The simplified infrastructure requirements make it a cost-effective choice for businesses looking to optimise their tracking systems without incurring significant expenses.

Furthermore, Quuppa Lite offers cost savings in terms of subscription fees. Its affordable nature and simplified infrastructure requirements reduce subscription costs compared to more precise location tracking solutions. This affordability makes Quuppa Lite an attractive option for businesses looking to optimise their tracking systems while controlling costs.

Easy Deployment of Quuppa Lite

Quuppa Lite is designed to be easy to deploy, minimising the time and effort required to set up the system. The simplified installation process allows businesses to quickly integrate the Quuppa system into their existing infrastructure.

The French Army uses modern training facilities to provide high-intensity combat training opportunities in complex urban environments for its military units and soldiers.

The urban combat training center CENZUB in Sissonne, northern France, is a unique real-world training environment, built to improve the operational performance of units in the field and in urban terrain. The armed forces can use the new-generation CERBERE training system developed by Thales Group and Ruag Defences France to have exercises of 500 infantrymen and their 80 vehicles on a 120 km² terrain, which is the size of a town of 3,000 inhabitants.

“Modern combat training requires a new level of preparation and closer cooperation as military units are using sophisticated technology and new weapon systems for executing operations. The CERBERE-system simulates, tracks and analyses force engagements in urban or open environments by implementing visual and sound animation devices as well as laser systems installed on weapons, allowing for the reproduction of the combat environment including battle effects like smoke and explosions”

Alexis Richard– Project Manager, Thales Group

The CERBERE-system allows detailed post action analysis, using combat videos, voice and data exchange recordings, and attrition generated by combat fire simulators using information and location systems. Thales has designed 3D Models of the entire combat area, including a village centre, 5-6 floor apartment buildings, industrial buildings, a supermarket, a church and even a hospital. The troops can be located on the map real time.

Soldiers tracked even in the most challenging training environments

The training center is equipped with 4,000 Quuppa Locators in 300 buildings and more than 5,000 tags will be installed into military vehicles, combat shoes and explosives by the end of 2022. Soldiers are tracked in real time with the accuracy of down to a few centimeters. The Quuppa system is very precise and reliable across diverse buildings with multiple floors and on staircases as well as in tunnels. Vehicles can be located with the Quuppa technology near the buildings and explosions of tagged test hand grenades can be monitored on the map. The effects of the explosions on the troops provide important information. The Quuppa technology is combined with GPS to ensure effective coverage of large outdoor areas.

The French Army commanders monitor and track tactical situations in the operation center and from touch-screen tablets. Even Battalion level maneuvers can be followed live. Instructors are able to supervise the operational capabilities of combat units. “In the digitalized battlefield, the troops can be advised during and after the actions with high-quality analysis review tools and combat training simulations”, comments Richard. “The CERBERE-system provides a new dimension to combat training, as close to real combat conditions as possible.”

“We tested different indoor location technologies in the training center and the Quuppa platform proved to be the best technology for the needed purposes. In urban warfare you need to know which room each soldier is in and as the walls might only be 10 centimetres thick we need very precise, continuous and dynamic positioning as well as excellent scalability in real time.”

Alexis Richard– Project Manager, Thales Group

Soldier using handheld device

“During this truly unique and demanding project we have proved that our indoor location solutions function very well in all kinds of buildings and in the most challenging environments, like for example in narrow tunnels underground, stairwells, industrial buildings and warehouses with steel roofs and walls”

Sammy Loitto, CEO of Quuppa, shares Quuppa’s origin, how it has evolved during the pandemic and what’s the future of Quuppa technology in the post-pandemic era.

Quuppa was established in September 2012, by the team responsible for the invention of the High Accuracy Indoor Positioning (HAIP) at the Nokia Research Center.

With over fifteen years of experience as its foundation, the Quuppa team commercialised their innovation to create a complete product platform – the Quuppa Intelligent Locating System™.

Our real-time location systems (RTLS) is used across a wide cross section of industries including Logistics, Healthcare, Security, Retail and Hospitality to Sports. Quuppa is using RTLS to help organisations improve overall business efficiency, optimize operations and enhance worker safety through asset tracking.

Today Quuppa is a leading provider of Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS), with 2600+ deployments in 55+ countries and over 200 partners worldwide.

Quuppa is a privately owned, independent company, employing 50+ people and holds its headquarters in Espoo, Finland – with offices in Washington DC (USA), Sydney (AUS), Shanghai & Shenzhen (CN).

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

We believe that in the future, all devices will be connected not just by data, but by location. Currently, ’location’ for most people means the location provided by outdoor positioning systems. But because most devices and users actually spend most of their time indoors, there is a growing demand for services that utilise indoor positioning.

In outdoor positioning, the entire globe can be covered by just a few satellites. But when it comes to indoor positioning, each building is a world of its own. Because the indoor positioning environment is so complex, it cannot be dominated by any single major player.

Our technology is open to be used by everyone in this collaborative ecosystem. Much like GPS is to outdoor positioning, we see the Quuppa technology becoming a de facto standard indoors; either to be used alone or in combination with other technologies. There are many use cases and different customer needs, which demand for a variety of technology solutions.

Quuppa wants to serve as a key building block for the new Location-Enabled World. We aim to be a catalyst that accelerates the success of our partner companies through our technology and know-how.

How has the company evolved during the pandemic?

The pandemic has had both positive and negative effects on the business. Location, in general, became a hot topic and the pandemic accelerated demand for location tracking.

This generated new safety use cases for the Quuppa locating system; e.g. to secure business continuity and worker safety in offices, factories, hospitals via social distancing and contact tracing; if someone was tested positive to back track who the person has been in contact with.

The negative effects were as for many others that many industries put new IOT investments on hold. Also, in some cases people could not travel onsite, so the project got postponed. On the other hand, we are seeing more governmental initiatives for example in the healthcare and elderly care industry to secure investments in digitalisation in order to be better prepared for future pandemics.

What can we hope to see from Quuppa Technologies in the future?

In 2020 we raised €20 million of funding and our focus has been to use this for product development; ease of use of the system, lowering the infrastructure cost in the set up phase and offering the whole range of use cases from high accurate positioning to room/zone level accuracy.

Our vision is that in 10 years location will become ubiquitous.

Twenty years ago, WiFi was a rarity, phones weren’t smart, and data was costly.

Today you can get WiFi even on a plane; all devices from toothbrushes to tower cranes are online, and everyone understands the value in connectivity.

But what will the next 15 years bring? At Quuppa, we see a clear path from today’s Connected World toward a Location-Enabled World.

What we mean is that data without context is not relevant. Connectivity itself doesn’t make anything smart. Only by enriching data and connectivity with location will our world become truly smart.

We envision the value of location to be as clearly understood in 2030 as the value of connectivity is today. Meanwhile, we are seeing more and more businesses leveraging on Location-Based Services for driving their everyday operations.

“I am happy to become the new CEO at Quuppa and I feel excited by the possibility of getting to lead a company that is at such an interesting stage in its history. Quuppa has already proven its growth capabilities, it has a highly competitive product portfolio, and its technology know-how is top-notch. The recently completed funding round has placed Quuppa in a prime position to grow further towards becoming market leader,” says Sammy Loitto, incoming Quuppa CEO.

Before his current spell at Bittium, Loitto worked in various leadership and sales positions at companies, including Gryphon Secure, Jolla, and Airbus.

Kalliola will continue with the company and concentrate on exploring new ways for Quuppa technology to become part of various automation systems of the future.

“Our technology has fantastic potential because we are able to locate targets with a centimetre-level accuracy and apply any type of radio signal to do this. For example, we would be able to provide self-driving vehicles with a highly accurate, camera and radar-independent steering system that works even in snowy, rainy or foggy conditions,” says Kalliola.

”A great number of other possible use cases can be found in the fields of building automation, healthcare, retail, logistics, and drones. In my new role, I will work together with chip manufacturers and other technology manufacturers to explore these possibilities,” Kalliola says.

Quuppa recently completed a 20 million euro funding round. Investors included the Finnish growth company focused private equity investor Bocap, and Tech Consulting Group TCG. Both of these investors have strong previous experience in helping technology companies achieve international success.

Quuppa already has more than 200 partners all over the world, with the company’s systems used in manufacturing, healthcare, smart buildings – and even in sports. The global mobile operator Orange is using Quuppa technology. In the field of smart offices, Quuppa has partnered with Haltian to create solutions for TietoEvry and Halton, amongst others. In sports, Quuppa technology is employed in Wisehockey’s smart puck system which follows the puck and the players in real time during an ice hockey match. The system is used in the Finnish Liiga’s top-division and in the international KHL league.

Quuppa has been listed as one of Finland’s Best Workplaces by the prestigious Great Place to Work®.

The company took part in the Great Place to Work (GPTW) competition for the first time this year, and was already awarded the certification and now the listing.

On the 28th of April 2021, Quuppa was listed as one of Finland’s Best Workplaces, in the category of small-sized companies with 20-49 employees. According to the GPTW Trust Index survey, employees consider the company to be a great place to work, making the company eligible for recognition. Obtaining the certification, especially in the midst of a corona pandemic, is a sign of a healthy work environment and culture.

“We are delighted that Quuppa was listed in the very first year of our participation in this competition. Having a good time at work is equally important for me as achieving good results, and I believe the two go hand in hand. People are most motivated and productive when they are happy and enjoy their work!” says Kimmo, Quuppa co-founder and CEO.

Confidence is Paramount in Employee Experience

The results emphasise a strong confidence in management. Quuppa employees feel that they are trusted and their skills are valued. In addition to management, the results emphasise the company’s community spirit, teamwork and open communication. Colleagues trust and support each other, and everyone pitches in to maintain the spirit. Taking care of the mental well-being of employees is always important, and becomes even more so during challenging times.

The results also reflect that Quuppa employees feel the company offers them opportunities to flourish and grow, according to their individual skills and preferences. Ville Norra, who has been involved in the company from almost the beginning, is a good example of this. In addition to the Creative Director title, he is responsible for designing the products and developing the user experience.

“I’ve got to try and learn over the years, many different things and to define the role, depending on what feels good. I have never once thought that I come to work because I get paid for it, but I always think that I come here because the work is nice.” Norra says.

Quuppa’s team spirit has also carried over to the remote work required by the pandemic. The teams have developed their processes collaboratively, and the culture includes heavily cultivated techie humour.

International and People-Oriented

Quuppa has targeted the international market from the very beginning and the majority of its customers are from outside of Finland. Growth has been steady in all markets. In addition to Keilaniemi in Espoo, the company has offices in Washington, Sydney, Shanghai and Shenzhen, and its ecosystem includes more than 200 partners globally.

The development-oriented company invests especially in recruitment and successful candidate experiences. Quuppa grew its team last year by about 10 new employees and there are plans to recruit the same amount again this year. The staff is diverse in terms of both age and gender distribution, as well as nationalities, which total almost 10.

Growing Together With The Company

Young professionals, in particular, are interested in an innovative technology company operating in a new field, where you can genuinely influence your goals and grow within the company. The fact that the official language of the company is English adds to the interest.

“Multiculturalism brings many benefits and broadens the perspectives. Quuppa’s organisational structure is also wonderfully smooth, anyone can ask for help,” says Diana Bobkova from Russia, who recently started in Quuppa’s product management team as a Junior Product Manager.

“I believe many are attracted to our open culture where humour flourishes. I think the GPTW certification sums up the essentials, this is a great place to be at work.” Ville Norra sums up.

Press Release, Paris, France, & Espoo, Finland, April 2021

Quuppa, a leading technology provider for real-time locating systems (RTLS) and indoor positioning systems (IPS), and Actility, a global provider of LPWAN connectivity solutions, announce a deep technological cooperation for integration of their software systems and tracking devices made by Abeeway, an Actility Group company, specialized in fused multi-technology geolocation for the Internet of Things.

Through the partnership, Quuppa and Actility will develop products that work seamlessly together to provide added value to end customers. Enhancements include making Abeeway’s ATEX certified tags trackable by the Quuppa Intelligent Locating System™, a one-size-fits-all technology platform for location-based services and applications. This enables the companies to provide a powerful, versatile and scalable asset tracking solution for industrial environments, achieving a location accuracy of below 1 meter.

Tracking objects outdoors or indoors in an industrial environment presents a lot of challenges. When choosing the right indoor or outdoor positioning technology for your demands, many different factors come into play. While some applications demand pinpoint accuracy, others require more basic knowledge of an object’s presence within a defined space.

On the one hand, Quuppa’s Intelligent Locating System™ is a powerful engine for various location-based services and applications. It provides accurate and real-time positioning data for tracked Bluetooth® devices, by using advanced proprietary algorithms.

On the other hand, Abeeway long autonomy devices allow continuous usage for months and years thanks to LoRaWAN® connectivity. The devices work both indoors and outdoors thanks to their multi-technology geolocation system, integrating GPS, Abeeway’s patented Low-power GPS, WiFi Sniffing, Bluetooth Low Energy & Bluetooth LE Beaconing feature for precise indoor tracking.

Abeeway devices combine cutting-edge location technologies, robust hardware, a meticulous selection of high-performing low-power chipsets and the no-compromise optimization of software. This allows flexible behaviour, highly responsive to changing needs, and guarantees the location of assets and people in various coverage scenarios.

Unlimited IoT use cases for Industries and Healthcare.

Making Abeeway trackers compatible with Quuppa software allows new types of use cases for indoor and outdoor geolocation. The integrated solution is designed to deliver reliable location data even in complex indoor and outdoor use cases or hazardous environments like a construction site, a mine, a refinery. It provides you with real-time data of the operating status of your machines and monitoring of mobile assets as well as people. This unique, custom fit IoT tracking solution is particularly relevant for use cases such as asset tracking and management in indoor facilities, factories, resource tracking, theft prevention, warehouse logistics, fleet management and much more.

Favendo, a provider of RTLS solutions, both Quuppa’s and Actility Solution Partner in Germany for more than a year, is already integrating Abeeway devices into its RTLS system and will be offering the solution to their customers. The integrated Favendo-Quuppa-Abeeway solution is applicable for real-time medical asset tracking in hospitals. The nursing staff spends a lot of time searching for medical equipment in their daily work. Thanks to Abeeway’s compatibility with Quuppa technology this solution can be integrated into an existing HIS and can increase productivity by up to 14% while reducing costs by up to 18%. It will provide a complete overview of the historical usage pattern and real-time location of patients, medical equipment, staff or medications.

“We are excited to welcome Actility/Abeeway into the Quuppa Partner Ecosystem, as this partnership opens up new possibilities for industrial applications, where accurate positioning is required”Fabio Belloni, Chief Customer Officer and Co-Founder of Quuppa commented on the announcement.

“Ensuring seamless positioning of industrial assets, both indoor and outdoor, is the essence of Abeeway’s technology and products. Our partnership with Quuppa allows us to bring this principle one step further, leveraging their technology to offer a sub-meter accuracy positioning solution. Combined with the power of vertical applications such as the ones of Favendo or Industrax, our industrial customers benefit from the most advanced low-power asset tracking solution of the market.” says Shmuel Solomon, Channels Sales Manager, Enterprise Products at Actility.

“Congratulations to our partners, Quuppa and Actility/Abeeway! This strategic alliance adds a lot of value for us and our customers. The ATEX certified Abeeway tags are perfect for industrial environments and the Quuppa positioning platform provides great customizability and scalability for different use cases. Now all of this can be easily integrated into our Zircon API, so our end customers can access the data through one single interface” says Stefan Balduf, CEO at Favendo.

“As a long-time partner of both Quuppa and Actility/Abeeway, we are happy to see the two companies starting a direct partnership. With the integration of these two technologies, it is now much easier to deploy both wide-area outdoor tracking per LoRaWAN backbone and precise indoor tracking solutions at the same time, using just one device” says Nicolai Karl, Product Manager at INDUTRAX, a technology-independent Location-Aware Software provider.
